Speech and language

Many children with autism have speech and language delay, however, there are many things you can do to help children develop. For example, playing games and using visual symbols and pictures. Even for children who remain non-verbal there are lots of things you can do to help.

Communication is not just about using speech; we communicate in all sorts of other non-verbal ways such as gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice. For children who do not develop speech, it can be helpful to provide them with the tools they need to communicate such as visuals and PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)

Purchasing such resources can sometimes be quite costly however there are many things you can do at home for free just by using a little bit of creativity. Generally, it is a good idea to talk to your child’s GP about a referral for speech and language therapy and on most occasions, they will refer you to an NHS specialist. There are also many private speech and language therapists who offer support. However, there can often be long waiting lists through the NHS and private therapy can sometimes be quite expensive. LP Autism Consultancy can provide you with many practical ideas and tips on how to help with your child’s speech and language and offer ideas to help improve communication. By using tried and tested methods LP Autism Consultancy can bridge the gap whilst you are waiting for a referral.
